FANAF’s next General Assembly will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, from February 15 to 17, 2027. The announcement was made by Mamadou Koné during an interview with François Olivier Edime, marking the first major continental gathering organized under his presidency.
After Marrakech and Abidjan, FANAF heads to Kigali
Following Marrakech and then Abidjan, FANAF appears set to continue its continental momentum in one of Africa’s capitals most closely associated with innovation, digital transformation and modern governance.
Over the years, FANAF has established itself as one of the leading gatherings for the insurance industry in French-speaking Africa and beyond. Each edition brings together hundreds of insurance executives, reinsurers, regulators, brokers, insurtech companies, as well as representatives of African and international financial institutions.
The 2026 edition, held in Abidjan, notably brought together several major pan-African and international groups against a backdrop shaped by the growth of African insurance markets, inclusive insurance, digitalization and the application of artificial intelligence to the sector.
A FANAF undergoing a transformation
Beyond the choice of destination, however, Kigali could symbolize a new stage in FANAF’s development.
Since taking over the presidency of the federation, Mamadou Koné has announced a broad transformation program aimed at modernizing the organization and strengthening its operational efficiency.
During the interview, the FANAF president notably outlined several major reforms involving:
- the restructuring of the General Secretariat;
- the creation of specialized technical committees;
- the development of new growth opportunities;
- and the modernization of the federation’s events.
The stated objective is to evolve the FANAF General Assembly toward a format increasingly focused on:
- thematic workshops;
- strategic discussions;
- knowledge and expertise sharing;
- and the development of concrete roadmaps for African insurance markets.
Technology, growth and new challenges for the industry
During the interview, Mamadou Koné also addressed several structural challenges that the African insurance industry will have to face in the coming years.
The FANAF president particularly highlighted:
- the low insurance penetration rate across Africa;
- operational inefficiencies within the sector;
- the transformations driven by artificial intelligence;
- regulatory developments;
- and the rapid evolution of insurance professions.
He also emphasized the need to strengthen:
- insurance for major infrastructure projects;
- the retention of premiums on the continent;
- life insurance;
- inclusive insurance;
- microinsurance;
- agricultural insurance;
- and solutions targeting African SMEs.
Kigali, a symbol of an Africa looking to the future
Against this backdrop, the choice of Kigali appears consistent with the federation’s new ambitions.
Over the past several years, Rwanda has progressively established itself as one of Africa’s dynamic hubs for finance, technology, innovation and international events.
The central theme of the 2027 edition will be:
“African Insurance in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Catch Up, Innovate, Go Beyond.”
The 51st FANAF General Assembly in Kigali could therefore become a landmark edition for the future of African insurance and for Mamadou Koné’s presidency, particularly with regard to the transformation and modernization of the industry.
