Continental Reinsurance is strengthening its presence in East Africa. The pan-African reinsurer has received approval from the National Bank of Rwanda to establish a representative office in Kigali. Operating since 10 August 2026 under the name Continental Reinsurance (R) Limited, the new office is intended to bring the Group closer to insurers, reinsurance brokers and other stakeholders in the Rwandan market.
Continental Reinsurance is expanding its presence across Africa with a new operation in Rwanda.
The Group announced on 26 August 2026 that it had obtained a licence from the National Bank of Rwanda (NBR) to establish a representative office in Kigali.
The entity, named Continental Reinsurance (R) Limited, became effective on 10 August 2026.
A representative office closer to the Rwandan market
The new operation takes the form of a representative office, rather than a new locally incorporated reinsurance company.
According to Continental Reinsurance, the Kigali office will serve as a local liaison and market development presence.
Its role will include strengthening the Group’s relationships with insurance companies, reinsurance brokers and other stakeholders in Rwanda’s insurance industry.
The office is also expected to bring the reinsurer closer to its clients and partners and provide more responsive local support.
This presence complements the technical and underwriting capabilities already provided by Continental Reinsurance through its East African operations.
Strengthening Continental Re’s presence in East Africa
For Continental Reinsurance, the establishment of the Kigali office forms part of its broader regional strategy.
The Group describes the new presence as another step in its long-term commitment to East Africa.
Commenting on the announcement, Kevin Mworia, Managing Director of Continental Reinsurance, highlighted Rwanda’s strategic importance to the Group and its intention to strengthen its proximity to partners in the market.
Continental Reinsurance also indicated that it would introduce its local representative dedicated to the Rwandan market.
A market supervised by the National Bank of Rwanda
The National Bank of Rwanda is responsible for the regulation and supervision of the country’s insurance sector.
Its supervisory scope includes insurance and reinsurance companies, brokers, actuaries, bancassurance agents and reinsurance representative offices.
This supervision notably involves licensing, off-site monitoring and on-site inspections.
The opening of the Kigali office therefore gives Continental Reinsurance a local presence designed to strengthen its relationships with Rwanda’s insurance and reinsurance professionals.
